Teach/Volunteer at MCA
Teaching Fellows Program
“It is an honor and a privilege to work here.” Spoken by one of our Teaching Fellows, this sentiment is echoed by many who have shared the experience of teaching at Mother Caroline Academy.
Teaching Fellows are central to our faculty. We believe that a person’s drive, commitment, purpose, and passion for educating our students coupled with their college degrees and previous experiences compliments the teaching skills they will learn.
Teach at MCA
Because of our effective educator training model and our practice of team teaching, we offer a strong learning experience for both the students and Teaching Fellows.
We require a teaching fellow to have a four year college degree. Experience working with youth, or a particular interest in girls’ education is also helpful, but we do not require nor expect that a teaching fellow has taken any coursework in education during their course of study. While teaching experience is not necessary, applicants for the teaching fellow position must have enthusiasm for MCAEC’s mission and a willingness to serve. Many of our teaching fellows come to the Academy having just completed their undergraduate studies, but some come to us from other stages in their adult and professional lives. We understand that during their experience, teaching fellows will learn just as much as our students will be learning. We offer teaching fellows residential communal- style living on the 4th floor at the school. Each teaching fellow has a private bedroom. Room and board are provided free of charge and our teaching fellows receive a modest stipend of $400-$500/month.
– Teach 3 classes with support from experienced administrators and educators.
– Lead extracurricular activities in the afternoons.
– Supervise recess, evening study, and periodic weekend field trips.
– Modern, communal housing with private bedroom
– Stipend of $400 a month ($500 a month for second year teaching fellows)
– Full health and dental insurance (through AmeriCorps)
– Professional development in collaboration with area colleges and universities
– Use of school-owned vehicle with valid driver’s license
Please send a resume and cover letter to : email@example.com. Should we feel you are a strong candidate for the Program, we will be in touch to request additional information, including: a completed Teaching Fellow Application, an official undergraduate transcript, and one letter of recommendation. Once we receive this information, candidates will be brought in for a day to visit classes and meet with administrators, teachers, and students. This visit will be an overnight visit to give candidates an idea of what it is like to live and work at MCA.
Teaching experience is not necessary, but applicants must have enthusiasm for MCAEC’s mission and a willingness to serve.
In an effort to provide consistency in the curriculum the Academy has salaried lead educators who are responsible for the 4th grade program, Social Sciences, English/Language Arts, and in Math/Science. These educators come to the Academy with several years of teaching and experience in educational settings. They serve as mentors to teaching fellows, helping them to facilitate learning. Lead educators also play an important role in the admissions and high school application process.
Professional Growth Opportunities
Throughout the year, our faculty has the opportunity to attend workshops and conferences within the context of education. We offer in-house professional days during the year, where faculty will devote a day to focus on curriculum, testing, classroom management, and technology. The faculty meets weekly throughout the year to debrief and prepare for upcoming events and to debrief teaching and learning strategies. Faculty may also elect to enroll in graduate school courses through our partnerships with local colleges.
