Marilyn Peguero Adult Education Student/Academy Parent “To change your life you’ve got to try and never say no.” Marilyn Peguero is a student in Adult Education’s ESL Level 4 class. Originally from the Dominican Republic, Marilyn came to the United States in 1984. She wanted to create a better future for herself and her children. Marilyn worked her way up through a series of jobs, each time increasing her responsibilities, and refining her English language skills. Through an internship in 1999 offered by Jewish Vocational Services, Marilyn gained experience in the Billing Department at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Now 8 years later, she is still employed there. Education is very important to Marilyn’s entire family. Her youngest son is a student at West Roxbury High School. Her oldest son is studying business at Suffolk University. Her daughter, Anny, is a serious and hard working student at Mother Caroline Academy. Marilyn began investigating schools for her daughter when Anny was 3 years old! Prior to joining the Academy, Anny attended MCAEC’s Shining Star After-School program. Marilyn recently told her English teacher about a meeting regarding Anny in the Academy. She said that Anny’s teachers were happily surprised at the improvement in Marilyn’s English language skills. She said, “I understood everything. I used my English that I learned here.” Marilyn continues to study and plans to attend college. |
ABOUT THE ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM
Mother Caroline Academy and Education Center’s Adult Education Program serves approximately 250 students per semester. Our mission is to reach the parents and family members of the Academy and Shining Star students. Our classes are also open to the community. Classes are currently offered in English as a Second Language, Literacy, GED Preparation, Citizenship, and a wide variety of computer classes. For more information or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please contact the Coordinator at 617-427-1177, extension 105. |
HISTORY The Adult Education Program had its beginnings in small ESL (English as a Second Language) classes and computer classes held for parents of Mother Caroline Academy students when the school was still in its former building. Parents attended these classes during the evening, while their daughters attended evening study sessions. At that time, both space and staff were scarce. When Mother Caroline Academy eventually moved to a larger facility in 1998, a substantial portion of the additional space was allocated to create the Education Center. This encompassed both Adult Education and the Shining Star After-School program. The Adult Education program, while still focusing on parents and family members of Academy and Shining Star students, reaches beyond these family members to include adults from Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan. |
MISSION The mission of MCAEC is to serve whole families, providing education not only for middle school girls, but also for adult family members, and younger siblings. We believe this model provides a healthy and steady base from which families can achieve stability and security. The Education Center is dedicated to offering affordable, high quality education. We strongly believe it is through education that individuals and families are empowered to achieve their highest potential; it is our dream that all may have access to a liberating education. |
