January 2, 2018

Dear Mother Caroline Community,

Welcome back from the recent holiday break, and best wishes for 2018!

On behalf of the Head of School Search Committee, we are writing to give you an important update on our accelerated search process.

As we indicated in an earlier communication, prior to December vacation, our consultants presented the Search Committee with information regarding five excellent candidates. We have decided to invite two of those candidates to visit MCA within the next few days. Both finalists are experienced school leaders with demonstrated commitment to urban education and to the education of girls. During their full-day visits, each candidate will spend time in classrooms and will be interviewed by members of the school leadership team, by faculty and staff, by parents, and by some of our older girls. Detailed schedules for each visit appear on our website (under Head of School Search), along with each finalist’s resume and statement of educational philosophy.

On Friday, January 5th, Annmarie Quezada will visit us. Annmarie (Bachelor of Arts, Boston College; Master of Arts in Teaching, Salem State University) is currently serving as Interim Head of School at Esperanza Academy in Lawrence, MA, and is devoted to serving an all-girls school. She previously held a variety of teaching and leadership positions over the course of twelve years at St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, MA.

On Monday, January 8th, Imana Legette will visit. Imana (Bachelor of Arts, University of North Carolina, Charlotte; Master of Education, Pepperdine University) has spent the last four years serving as Director of Diversity & Inclusion at William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, PA. An experienced school leader in the areas of admission, fundraising, and curriculum development, Imana is profoundly passionate about the mission at MCA.

At the conclusion of each visit, all members of our community will have the opportunity to give feedback to the Search Committee through a simple survey – links can be found below. While it is the sole responsibility of the Search Committee to make a final recommendation to the Board of Trustees regarding the appointment of our next Head of School, your perceptions of each candidate’s strengths and/or potential areas of concern will be important for us to consider. These surveys will close on Saturday, January 13 at 5pm.

We continue to be hopeful that the Board of Trustees will be able to announce the appointment of our next head of school by mid-February. Our new head will assume responsibility at MCA on July 1, 2018. We are grateful to be able to count on Ed Hudner to continue to lead our school community through the end of June.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact either one of us: pbh1980@gmail.com or sgenere@gmail.com. Thank you, in advance, for your participation in this important process.

Dear MCA Community,
As we enter the holidays, we are writing to update you on the progress of the search for a new Head of School for Mother Caroline Academy, which will accelerate as soon as January. The Search Committee has been in regular contact with RG175. Below is a summary of our actions.

MCA Head of Search Survey. The survey went out in November, and the majority of responses were consistent with what the firm has seen at schools similar to Mother Caroline: all constituents desire the next Head be focused on the girls’ education, have experience in urban education, someone who understands the community in which MCA resides, demonstrates academic excellence, who will support and improve faculty and enhance the school’s reputation. The MCA community is looking for inspired educational leadership and vision.

Visits to MCA. Diana Monteith, Board Chair, and Peter Holland have visited Mother Caroline on several occasions to meet with faculty, staff and Ed Hudner, the current Head of School. They’ve had many in-person touch points. Peter, Diana, and I as well as Bob Henderson and Jerry Katz from RG175 will also meet with faculty and staff on Monday, December 18, to provide an update on the search.

Potential Candidates. RG175 has performed an extensive search, vetted several applicants and is confident that they can present us with 4 – 6 candidates to review, including two candidates who were recommended to the Search Committee prior to the firm being hired. Each candidate is highly-skilled with impressive experiences. The Search Committee will vet these candidates and shortlist them to a final two or three for school visits.

MCA School Visits & Executive Session. The final two to three candidates will be asked to participate in school visits immediately after the holidays to meet with faculty, staff, students, parents and Board members. Following these visits, the Board of Trustees will hold a special executive session to discuss the candidates and vote for the next Head of School.

We are on track to announce a new Head of School by mid-February 2018. RG175 will provide coaching and consulting services for the new head through his/her first year of service.

If you have any questions about the progress of the search and the information provided here, please feel free to contact Peter or me.

Best wishes,

Sandra Génere (MCA ’97), Trustee and Co-Chair, Search Committee
